DAKAR 2013 Retrospective by Gilles Gard
Return of the Dakar I just wish you all my best wishes, health, happiness and prosperity for the year 2013.
As did you all know it, it is in regret and sadness I have early return too soon this Dakar that was for me a true hard Dakar but which announced within reach of my ability to get to the end, both at the level of training that I could carry out in 2012 than by knowledge of the infrastructure of the Dakar. A Dakar I started calm and reasoned, with as slogan go at the end of this human and sports adventure regardless of classification. The first day (5 January), began with a departure at 8:00 in the morning in Lima to reach the podium of departure then continue by a long link of 250 km along the Pacific to reach early afternoon the bivouac of Pisco or I made near the starta special in the dunes of 13 km. A way for me and many others quickly put in the race and rediscover the joys and difficulties of flying in the sand. The arrival of this first special Road book of the next step has been given to me and then began the journey of each driver, filing of the bike to the assistance that would make a revision, mounting of the tent, shower, preparation of the road book (1 h 30), meal, preparation of clothes for the next day and sum well deserved in a noise of generators, engine, tooling.
The next morning (6 January), lifted 5:30 for a planned departure at 7:00, tent folding and storage of the trunk in the truck, hearty breakfast and lonely departure for a 85 km road link to reach the start of the special stage around 9:00. The link being on the open road, the first difficulties of movement were know, crowd, crossing villages, city, complete anarchy of circulation of Peruvians, dilapidated road infrastructure etc. that demanded the utmost vigilance because the risk of accident was omnipresent.

The departure of the 242 km special was given on part of rolling track of 30 km, made difficult by holes, stones or concentration should be permanent followed by entry into a vast lunar and beautiful country made up of dunes to no longer finish. My progress was going very well, I followed perfectly my navigation with the sandstone of exceedances of retarded drivers, when all of a sudden, Km 79, in the descent of a large dune my bike began to stop responding to my accelerations. At the time I thought I'd gone dead! Alas no, I actually had a problem of box clutch or speed. Diagnosis was quickly established, the clutch of worked and my motorcycle refused to advance. I tried as well as help badly of out me but in vain because I owned no parts with me.  Spectators present Peruvians not far from the are so come tow me to get me to their makeshift camp to give me refreshments, comfort me and try to help out me. A troubleshooting of fortune then allowed me to regain a semblance of clutch allowing me just to go and to avoid leaving my bike there, abandoned to wait the brush truck. At this point, everything collapsed on me!  I couldn't do anything more, could not continue the special because the distance to arrive was still long, almost 160 kmand the temperature was 45 ° c, repair would have failed because the heating of the engine.  The only solution was to cut the dunes to find the visiting and go up the road to the bivouac to be serviced.  For me it was an encounter in the midst of the dunes with great, happy to help, courteous people, a great moment in distress that I will never forget. Left in convoys through the dunes, they handed me on the road to regain the bivouac located 120 km from the. I thought while Commissioners would be lenient and allow me to leave the next day, alas no, it was a round of the Championship of the world and the non-validation of a number of passages controls put out of the race driver. Back to the bivouac my bike was quickly taken in hand by mechanics who have quickly seen that my clutch discs had heated and were completely burned, the repair lasted 15 minutes! The next day, I decided to bivouac bivouac by road, on the route of the assistance in order to see the country, meet people and why go see drivers on the special passages. Alas, the same evening the organizers refused that I keep on the pretext that I was under their responsibility and that they could no longer know or I.
There was another disappointment that made me take the decision to return. I was disappointed, very disappointed! But now and with hindsight, I think they did well!  With regard to fatal accidents that he had subsequently on the road their decision is based. The movement in these countries is any made anarchic, you have to see to believe!
This is dear friends, dear partners how my adventure on the Dakar is finished. I wanted to share. It will resume soon in another form, by the delivery of 12 bikes that I will offer thanks to you to hospitals in the region for which you will be informed in time and hour.
I take this message to thank you and you address these some photos that trace my journey. Others will reach you soon

"Hello,

j used two cans during the first special when the temperature was extreme and intense effort. They have given me a surplus of energy and ease of recovery after effort. More importantly, the cans are lightweight, clutter less and easy to use. I had kept them in priority for the stage of the Andes with a passage at 4300 m but alas I could not spend.Dans the next months I'll make Mont Blanc so it will be another opportunity to test your products. Thank you for your collaboration. Sincerely, Gilles Gard"
